The Committee for Science, Education and Culture of the National Council (WBK-N) has approved the “State Exhibition” motion, it announced on Friday. The four current project initiatives Muntagna, NEXPO, Svizra27 and X27 welcomed this decision. The motion instructs the Federal Council to establish the preconditions for the next state exhibition starting in 2030.

In June 2022, the Federal Council and the Conference of Cantonal Governments (KdK) adopted a common position on the next state exhibition. Both parties expressly welcome the organization of a future “Expo”. The four project initiatives Muntagna, NEXPO, Svizra27 and X27 have further developed their concepts and made further preparations.

High financial losses if a project is delayed

In March 2023, the Federal Council announced “to everyone’s surprise” that it wanted to start financing the next state exhibition in 2028 at the earliest. A project delay of several years would have meant that the preparatory work carried out on all project initiatives to date would have to be frozen or jettisoned, the statement said. The financial damage would be difficult to measure.

That is why the sister committee WBK-S of the Council of States submitted a motion in July 2023 instructing the Federal Council to determine the preconditions for the next state exhibition starting in 2030.

Population supports new “Expo”

The ongoing preparatory work must under no circumstances be interrupted if we do not want the years of work of the project organizations, the cantons, the cities, the municipalities and the economy to be destroyed. The WBK-S approved the motion in September.

If the motion finds a majority in the National Council in the next step, preparations can take place from 2028 with the support of the federal government. It would be realistic to hold the next state exhibition from 2030 onwards. According to surveys, the population supports a new “Expo”. (SDA)
