In the Canton of Zurich: Committee hands over 13,000 signatures for euthanasia initiative

For the initiative to come into being, 6,000 of the 13,000 signatures collected must be valid, which should not be a problem. The committee, together with the euthanasia organizations Exit and Dignitas, announced on Wednesday that there is great support for the cause. After just a few weeks, the required 6,000 signatures had been collected.

The initiative wants private elderly and nursing homes to make euthanasia possible in the future. This corrects a decision of the canton council from October last year. He then decided that an obligation that had only recently been imposed should be lifted.

Currently, only homes managed by a municipality must allow assisted suicide. Private homes or community contractors may refuse, for example for religious reasons. Residents of these homes who wish to receive euthanasia must do so outdoors, for example in a private apartment or a hotel.

In addition to politicians, the initiative committee also includes celebrities such as Viktor Giacobbo and the journalist and columnist Karl Lüönd from Winterthur.
