Theiler’s party colleague and old political colleague confirmed a report in the Bern Tamedia newspapers. Hardly anyone in Switzerland has been active in a parliament for as long as Luzius Theiler.

In 1967 he was first elected to the Bern municipal council. He was a member of this group for a total of 33 years, with interruptions. He resigned in July 2020. He tried unsuccessfully to make a comeback in the elections at the end of 2020.

He became a member of parliament as a member of the State Ring of Independents (LdU). Most recently he was a member of the small Green Alternative Party (GaP).

Theiler was part of Bern’s political inventory. The city council and parliamentarians listened to him when he took up the lectern – and the electorate apparently appreciated the fact that he kept a ruthless eye on the authorities. He described himself as “critical of power, nature conservation and radical for fundamental rights”.

“Popularity was never your thing,” said then municipal council president Barbara Nyffeler (SP) upon his farewell in the summer of 2020. “It was always important for you to have an opinion, whether others shared it or not.” (SDA)
