Arthur Varnholt wants to become a member of the Council of States in the canton of Zurich.

It’s not a drink idea, but rather a beer idea. Arthur Varnholt (20) wants to win the second seat of the Council of States in the canton of Zurich. The young man is one of four candidates who filed for the second round of voting on November 19, alongside SVP candidate Gregor Rutz (51) and GLP candidate Tiana Angelina Moser (44).

Varnholt is a beer brewer himself and founded the beer company two years ago with a colleague, he says. Now they are participating in elections for the first time.

Politically, Varnholt wants to campaign for a so-called ‘sunset clause’ – in addition to abolishing the beer tax for small breweries. All laws must have an expiration date and then expire – if not extended in advance. “The administrative burden would decrease and the state would become leaner.” The program has also been influenced by neoliberal ideas; After all, Varnholt is also a member of the Young Liberals.

Candidacy as an advertising measure

And there’s another reason for his business-friendly policies: “When the economy is doing well, people drink a lot of beer,” he says. Varnholt openly admits: one of the reasons for running for office is to make his beer brand known. But not alone. “I decided to run for office after the FDP and centrist candidates withdrew,” says Varnholt. The political center must stand for elections. GLP-Moser cannot be counted among them. “In my opinion it’s more to the left.”

Varnholt started brewing beer as a student and founded his own brewery after graduating high school in computer science. Does his path now lead to the Council of States? The odds are in the per thousand range at most. (brother)
