The Swiss military is shopping. Their latest achievement: additional guided missiles for the Patriot system. Switzerland and the US have signed a corresponding procurement contract for this purpose. Parliament approved the 300 million francs for the tender in the Army Message 2023.

This is intended to further strengthen ground-air defense. Procurement of Patriot PAC-2 guided missiles is already underway. Parliament has already decided on this purchase with the army message 2022. According to Armasuisse, guided missiles of this type are aimed at defense against aircraft, drones and cruise missiles. However, it is only suitable for defense against short-range missiles to a limited extent.

That is why Defense Minister Viola Amherd (61) and her men are ordering again. PAC-3 guided missiles are being purchased, which also fit the Patriot system. A so-called offset agreement has been signed with the American manufacturer Lockheed Martin, reports the Federal Office for Armaments Armasuisse. This means: The defense company must compensate part of the order volume with orders to Swiss companies.

The new guided missiles expand ground air defense with the ability to counter short-range missiles much more effectively. Additionally, this latest type of Patriot guided missile is intended to increase the military’s endurance. The guided missiles are expected to be delivered in 2028 and 2029.

Air defense in focus

The appointment was made possible by the increase in the army budget decided by parliament due to the war in Ukraine. The latest guided missiles could be acquired earlier than previously planned.

The Patriot system and the new F-35A fighter aircraft are part of the Air2030 program. Other components include the Radar and C2Air projects. These two projects concern the gradual replacement or renewal of the air force’s command and control system. They were adopted in separate armament programs. (dba)
