Above all, it should have been a campaign show. The SVP wanted to bring parliament together on Thursday to debate Swiss asylum policy. She demands that the federal government reverse the new asylum practice for Afghan women. They have generally been granted asylum for several months as the federal government has reassessed the situation in Afghanistan.

But the other parties allow the SVP to face their demands. The extraordinary hearing on the asylum issue she requested is taking place – but not as quickly as the right-wing party would like.

SVP has to wait until December

The National Council office, which schedules the meetings of the grand chamber, rejected the SVP’s request for an accelerated session on Monday by 11 votes to 2, as National Council President Martin Candinas (43) said at the request of Blick. The result suggests that no one voted for it except the two SVP representatives in the office.

To convene an extraordinary session, the votes of at least a quarter of all National Council members are required. Because only the SVP has more seats, it can request such a special meeting on a specific topic at any time. As a rule, the discussion takes place as part of a regular session.

Parliament then meets for three weeks in December. At the next meeting in mid-November it will be decided when the extraordinary asylum hearing will take place during this period, Candinas said. The Council of States also does not want to discuss the SVP’s demands until December.

The number of asylum seekers is increasing

It was only a month ago that parliament and Asylum Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) had to attend a special session on asylum at the request of the SVP. Nothing tangible emerged from this – except the opportunity for the SVP to draw attention to the number 1 issue in the election campaign.

In November, the SVP will compete for seats in the Council of States in the second round of voting in various cantons. It is obvious that the SVP wants to hold the renewed asylum debate before these votes.

The SVP obviously argues differently. Mainly due to the new asylum practice among Afghan women, the number of asylum applications has increased by a third in the past month. Given this development, time is of the essence, the party said.

The liberals have also protested against the new asylum practice. Unlike the SVP, the discussion is not that urgent.
