Victory for Binder-Keller: Aargau Central National Councilor is a colorful queen

She is the dashing queen of the National Council elections in Aargau: Marianne Binder-Keller, member of the Center’s National Council, received the most votes on non-party lists.

In total, the centrist National Councilor collected 19,786 votes from voters whose preference does not go to the center, as shown by Statistics Aargau’s analysis published on Wednesday. The 65-year-old Binder-Keller, cantonal party chairman, was re-elected with a total of 40,107 votes.

In second and third place are two women: national councilor Irène Kälin (Greens) with 19,530 mixed votes and Gabriela Suter (SP) with 19,001 mixed votes.

Of those elected, one woman also received the fewest votes: the newly elected SP national councilor Simona Brizzi. She received 4,195 colorful votes out of a total of 28,814 votes. SVP Council Member Benjamin Giezendanner achieved the best absolute voting result with 93,141 votes.

Binder-Keller and Giezendanner will compete in the second voting round on November 19 for the vacant SVP seat in the Council of States. The evaluation of the elections for the National Council shows: Giezendanner receives many votes from his own camp, Binder-Keller can count on cross-party support.

The EPP received the largest share of colorful votes per party (including Young Lists), namely 34.6 percent. However, the EPP lost Lilian Studer’s previous seat to the SVP.

The SVP received the fewest colorful votes: 7.6 percent. The FDP received the largest number of colorful votes of any party including sublists and young lists of the SVP, namely 24,047 votes. Conversely, the SVP also received many votes from the FDP, a total of 16,587, as shown by Statistics Aargau’s analysis. (SDA)
