Valais FDP national councilor Philippe Nantermod is taking part in the second round of elections for the Council of States in his canton.

The state of Valais announced the names of the three candidates for the second election on November 12, shortly after 5 p.m. Most other candidates had already withdrawn from the race after the first round of voting on Sunday and the meetings of the various parties on Monday evening.

The two centrist politicians Rieder (52,748 votes) and Maret (43,204) were well ahead of the liberal Nantermod (25,145), who was about 18,000 votes behind in the first round.

Immediately after the announcement of the results, SVP Council Member Jean-Luc Addor (23,371 votes) threw in the towel. He had announced several times during the election campaign that he would not participate in the second round if he did not come fourth in the first round.
