After the large number of children in 2021, the number of births in 2022 fell by around eight percent to 82,371, as shown in the natural population movement statistics published by the BFS on Thursday.

According to the BFS, there are several possible reasons for this: The financial situation and fear for the future may have influenced family planning in Switzerland, but the large number of children in 2021 may also have had an influence.

More babies died in their first year of life. Infant mortality rose from 3.1 deaths per 1,000 live births to 3.8.

According to the BFS, infant mortality is mainly caused by deaths within the first 24 hours. About 60 percent of deaths in the first year of life occurred on the first day. (SDA)
