Pfund served on the National Council from 1983 to 1987. As former chairman of Pro Tell, the Society for Free Gun Law, he was determined to oppose the popular initiative “For Protection from Gun Violence”. The referendum that wanted to ban guns in private households failed at the ballot box.
Pfund was also involved in the “Swiss Action Committee against Schengen/EU accession”. However, the referendum against the Schengen-Dublin Agreement failed in the 2005 referendum.
In the 1980s, Pfund was also chairman of the FDP in the canton of Solothurn. He resigned his National Council mandate to participate in the replacement elections for the Government Council in the Canton of Solothurn in the autumn of 1987.
However, it was not he who was chosen as official candidate, but Cornelia Füeg, who ‘wildly’ stood as a candidate for a committee called ‘Freethinkers for a real popular election’. This led to disagreement within the party, which led, among other things, to the drawing up of new statutes.
