In cars with automation systems, the driver should be able to let go of the steering wheel in the future. In addition, automated parking must be possible without the presence of a driver. The Federal Council has sent the relevant regulations for consultation.
Automated vehicles can increase road safety and improve traffic flow, the Federal Council’s press release said. “They also offer new opportunities for the economy and for transport service providers.”
Vehicles with an automation system require type approval to be allowed on the road, the Federal Roads Office (Astra) announced on Wednesday. In addition, manufacturers would have to ‘fully demonstrate’ how road safety is guaranteed during automated driving.
Parking without a driver must be possible
If this is the case, drivers of these cars should be able to let go of the steering wheel after activating the automation system. You no longer have to constantly monitor traffic and the vehicle, but you still have to be ready to take back control at any time.
The Federal Council also wants automated parking to become possible without a driver in defined and signalized parking areas. (SDA/brother)
