This is in response to Germany’s recently introduced controls at the Czech border and serves to prevent smugglers from escaping, the Interior Ministry in Vienna said on Tuesday. The Austrian measure will initially remain in force for ten days from Wednesday, it was said.

After a long period of hesitation, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser informed the European Commission on Monday of stationary checks at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. According to Faeser, the aim is to limit irregular migration and further combat smuggling crime. Germany has also been checking travelers from Austria since 2015.

Last week, Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria extended their temporary controls at the border with Slovakia until early November to combat irregular migration via the Balkan route to Western Europe.
