Turbulent days for the University of Bern. Last week, a teacher on X (formerly Twitter) described the Hamas attack on Israel as a “birthday present.” The university professor was subsequently released “until the consequences are finally clarified.” Now he could face further consequences. Rector Christian Leumann will provide information about the specific measures at a media conference today at 3 p.m.
The teacher in question worked at the Institute for Middle Eastern Studies until his release. His undoing were two tweets he published on the first day of the Hamas attack. In a comment, he wrote “Shabbat Shalom” (“Peace be Sabbath”) in Hebrew under an attack video. This is a Jewish Sabbath greeting. The teacher made a cynical allusion to the Jewish holiday Simchat Torah. Because on this day Hamas’s great attack began.
Teacher despised Israeli victims
In a second post, the teacher showed his disdain for the dead and wounded on the Israeli side. He described the Hamas attack as “the best gift I received before my birthday.” He also thanked the Palestinian resistance.
As a result, the head of the Institute for Middle Eastern Studies was also criticized. Because she has a relationship with the teacher. In an initial statement, she described the university professor’s tweets on closer inspection as “innocent” but “without anti-Semitic intentions.”
Islamic experts and representatives of associations expressed their outrage. “The messages should clearly be interpreted as an ‘encouragement to violence,’” Islam expert Saïda Keller-Messahli told “20 Minutes.” It is therefore no longer acceptable for the university.
Under pressure from the media, the University of Bern initially distanced itself from the lecturer’s tweets and from any violence and support for it. The question is whether she will fire the university professor today, if at all, without notice. Blick reports live from the media conference. (rba)
