“We have a concrete development plan”: The military intelligence service wants to strengthen early detection

The Swiss Military Intelligence Service (MND) wants to strengthen early intelligence detection. “We have developed a concrete development plan for our professional and militia components,” said MND boss Daniel Krauer. (symbol image)

The war in Ukraine has made it clear how important such early detection is. “But balanced skills are important,” Krauer said in an interview with Tamedia published on Saturday. “Rush data collection alone is of no use. Ultimately, we must be able to process and distribute the information we collect in a targeted manner.” Artificial intelligence (AI) could help with this, but experienced analysts are still needed to classify the results.

Most MND employees have an academic background, Krauer said. Many of them have a master’s degree in political science, computer science, law or natural sciences. “We have about 15 percent women in our team. In addition to cleverness, you need creativity. My people also need a healthy level of distrust.”

The MND should not be confused with the Federal Civil Intelligence Service (NDB). The MND does not compete with this, says Krauer. “Instead, we exchange ideas and complement each other. Sometimes we create joint products, bringing in military expertise. This mandate is enshrined in law. The NDB is responsible for informing the Federal Council, the departments and the cantons. We have only one customer: the head of the army or the army leadership. (SDA)
