From ETH’s perspective, this is clearly a call to violence: “Solidarity with Palestine – Intifada to Victory” read posters calling for a rally in front of the University of Zurich on Thursday and a subsequent event in a university building.
The posters caused an uproar in the universities and put the Juso in distress. The organizer of the planned meeting, the communist group “Der Funke”, is considered to have close ties to the Young Socialists. On Friday morning on X it described itself as a “Marxist movement in the Juso and the trade unions”. Many “Funke” followers are said to be Juso members. Dersu Heri, who works for the editorial staff of ‘Funke’, submitted two resolutions together with other party members during the 2022 Juso annual meeting.
Gathering despite the ban
The communist group is controversial, even among leftists – and not just because of its stance on the Middle East conflict. Communists must “defend the oppressed Palestinians’ right to resistance,” says a recent article on the website “Funke.” There is also a photo in which students from the University of Bern form the victory sign with their hands and hold up several sheets of paper with the inscription “Intifada Until Victory”.
According to the description of the photo, the meeting would have taken place on Thursday in the university building. This is despite the fact that the university has banned the event. The University of Zurich also put an end to the demonstration.
Juso condemns behavior
De Juso is in favor of the universities taking action. She distanced herself from “Der Funke” on They “deeply” condemn the group’s inability to distance itself from the Islamist Hamas and demand clarification.
On its website, “Der Funke” itself addresses the accusation of justifying the atrocities of terrorists. It is said that we do not share Hamas’s ideology nor condone its actions. “Our differences with Hamas are fundamental,” they write, although they add: “But they are not nearly as fundamental as the differences that separate us from US imperialism – the most reactionary force in the world – and its accomplices in crime, who rules Israel. class, separated.”
At a distance from the communists
In view of the attitude of “Der Funke”, the young liberal president Matthias Müller (31) calls on the SP, trade unions and Juso to “immediately exclude all “Funke” members from their ranks”.
Juso president Nicola Siegrist (26) weighs it heavily. When asked by Blick, he said that he did not intend to call all 4,500 Juso members to inquire about possible “Der Funke” memberships. However, he confirms: there are ‘Funke’ people who are still members of Juso. But these are not present. A few years ago, ‘Der Funke’ made the decision to strategically turn away from Juso, Siegrist says. “One thing is clear: there is no place for trivializing massacres against the civilian population.”
The statement by “Der Funke” about X that it is a “Marxist movement” within the Juso is outdated. Siegrist says he has contacted the group about this and asked for adjustments. The name has now been changed. (lha)
