The second largest wind turbine in Switzerland, after Mont-Crosin in the Bernese Jura (16 wind turbines), will be put into operation in November. It is intended to cover the annual electricity consumption of Sainte-Croix’s 6,100 households and local businesses.
The creation of the wind farm was a forced labor. It took a quarter of a century to realize this project. The first feasibility study was conducted in 1998.
There was soon great resistance to the wind turbines in the region. After a legal marathon, the Federal Court gave the green light for the implementation of the project in April 2021. Construction started six months later.
Environmental groups are critical
In general, wind energy is struggling in French-speaking Switzerland, especially in the canton of Vaud. Several projects in the Vaud Jura, a region with a relatively high potential for wind energy, were delayed or blocked by objections and legal proceedings.
Last week it was announced that hundreds of objections had been received against the planned wind power plant in Mollendruz with twelve turbines. Various environmental associations believe that bird protection measures are inadequate. They also complain that temporary deforestation has increased dramatically. (SDA)
