Hamas should be banned in Switzerland.

Swiss politicians are now clearly responding to Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel. On Tuesday, the National Council’s Security Committee unanimously decided to adopt a motion ordering the Federal Council to ban Hamas.

Hamas has “now completely discredited itself as an interlocutor for peace with its inhumane and radically destructive attacks and justifications,” the statement said. In Switzerland, Hamas must also be described and treated as what it is: a terrorist organization.

The committee also spoke without dissent in favor of the government, which set out in a report what sanctions could be taken against Hamas. This must prevent Hamas from receiving support from Switzerland or from using the local financial system.

Cash flows unknown

“Today you cannot say anything about Hamas’s financial flows in Switzerland. Because: the financial institutions are not obliged to report these transactions – precisely because Hamas is not considered a terrorist organization,” said Mauro Tuena (51), SVP National Councilor and Chairman of the Security Committee of the National Council. That would only be the case if Parliament decided to do so by a majority vote.

The Federal Council could also do this on its own authority, but only if there are UN sanctions. But that is not the case at the moment, says Tuena. (she)
