Fighters from the Palestinian terror organization Hamas launched a major attack on Israel this weekend.

SP national councilor Fabian Molina (33) ended up in a shitstorm. The reason for this was a message on X (formerly Twitter). Molina wrote it on Sunday – and it made a lot of people angry. Critics accuse him of downplaying the suffering of Israelis. But the social democrat defends himself against this in an interview with Blick.

Hamas launched a major attack on Israel this weekend. The Palestinian terrorist organization fired thousands of rockets, shot through border fences, invaded Israeli territory and carried out indiscriminate attacks. At least 700 Israelis were killed and more than 2,500 people were injured, according to Israel’s Health Ministry.

Controversial tweet from SP-Molina

Amid these events, SP national councilor Molina said on social media: “The SP Switzerland and I are shocked by the suffering that the escalation of violence is causing among the civilian population in Israel and Palestine. Our thoughts are with the victims.” International humanitarian law must be respected. Attacks on civilians are never legitimate.

Molina’s statement sparked fierce criticism. Someone answered him: ‘Anyone who equates the victims of Israel and Palestine begins with the first relativization between victim and perpetrator.’ Others have compared Molina’s position to the SVP’s position toward Russia in the war in Ukraine.

“The escalation of violence in recent days undoubtedly came from Hamas.” It should clearly be called that, Jonathan Kreutner (44), secretary general of the Swiss Association of Israelite Communities, told Blick.

“Civilians are also dying in Gaza”

Confronted with the accusations, Molina explains: “Israel was the victim of a terrorist attack.” Hamas has committed brutal, abhorrent war crimes against civilians. “Nothing can excuse that.” But international humanitarian law protects everyone – including the civilian population in the Gaza Strip. “Citizens there are now suffering and dying as a result of the bombing by the Israeli army.”

Moreover, the situation cannot be compared with the war in Ukraine. Because Russia is a sovereign state, but Hamas is a terrorist group that cynically holds the Palestinians hostage.

“Every death is one too many.” Even in the event of such a terrible attack, Israel cannot simply bomb. Moreover, we should not forget that the Israelis’ massive settlement policy in recent decades has hampered the peace process. (rba)
