The Bavarian State Criminal Investigation Department (LKA) announced this on Friday in Munich. The man has now been extradited from the Czech Republic and is in custody in Traunstein. However, the man has not yet revealed where the pectoral cross is located.
The pope, who died on New Year’s Eve, spent many years of his life in Traunstein and left one of his pectoral crosses to the parish of St. Oswald, which he described as his “home parish church.” This was put on display in the church, where the chest was subsequently stolen from a display case on June 19.
According to the LKA, the forensic investigation was able to secure extensive evidence at the crime scene. Comparison of the traces with various international databases led to the 53-year-old Czech.
From 1990 onwards he started stealing in Germany and other European countries and was imprisoned in several European countries. On August 18, the man turned himself in to Czech police near his home after the pressure on him to investigate became too much.
The Traunstein public prosecutor and the art researchers from the LKA want to concentrate their further investigation on the whereabouts of the cross. Because the 53-year-old is considered an intensive offender, he faces a prison sentence of several years for the theft.
However, the chief prosecutor promised the man “a significant reduction in sentence” for returning the cross. The researchers also offered a reward of 1,000 euros for information. (SDA)
