No more orders: federal government punishes controversial IV expert

The federal government has instructed the IV agencies to subject the existing PMEDA reports to a new quality control.

The IV therefore complies with the recommendation of the Federal Commission for Quality of Medical Assessments (EKQMB), as the Federal Social Insurance Agency announced on Wednesday. This had revealed formal and substantive shortcomings in the PMEDA medical reports – without providing any details.

Legally binding decisions remain in force

The PMEDA previously produced bi- and polydisciplinary reports on behalf of the IV agencies, i.e. expertise with two or more medical disciplines. According to the federal government, it has not accepted any new assignments since July 1, 2023 and has canceled contracts for expert work.

The BSV wrote that all cases that are still open and ongoing through PMEDA will now be re-examined if there is no legally binding decision on benefits in the specific case. Legally binding performance decisions remained in effect.

The PMEDA currently has orders for 16 bi- and 55 polydisciplinary reports awarded before July 1. According to the BSV, these should also be checked accordingly as soon as they become available at the IV office.

Suspicion of favoritism

A year ago, Minister of Health Alain Berset stated that it was not yet advisable to suspend the contract for PMEDA. At that time, several criminal cases were already pending against the office. However, in 2020, official research showed that the agency in question met the technical requirements for carrying out IV notifications.

However, PMEDA has been suspected of cronyism for some time. The right to IV benefits is usually clarified on the basis of a medical report. Since 2022, expert interviews must be recorded. (SDA)
