Four German-speaking Swiss have already made it clear: they want to join the government as a successor to SP federal councilor Alain Berset (51). Now former party leader Roger Nordmann (50) from Welscher is inviting people for the first time to the media conference in Bern at 10.15 am.

It can be expected that the Vaudois will also officially announce his ambitions for the Federal Council. In addition to Nordmann, the president and vice-president of the SP Vaud will participate in the media conference.

An expert – also in energy issues

Nordmann will once again shake up the race for Berset’s successor. He is a heavyweight in the Social Democratic Party. He has been a member of the National Council for almost ten years. For eight years, until this summer, he led the federal parliamentary group of the SP.

The Vaudois and influential energy politician has twice tried unsuccessfully to become a member of the Council of States. With one exception, he can remain in the federal parliament for another four years, but if he does not make the jump to government, his time in Bern will be over by 2027 at the latest. The party would lose a strategist who is sometimes provocative, but can also make compromises with citizens.

The thoroughbred SP politician is married to financial and transport director Florence Germond (46) from Lausanne. They have two children.

Nordmann can oppose the KKS

Because the other seat of the SP Bodesraad, Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59), from the Jura, is already occupied by a woman from Switzerland, Nordmann’s chances are limited. This is also because there are two other Latins, Guy Parmelin (63) and Ignazio Cassis (62), in the government.

But the SP man, who lives in Lausanne, could face FDP woman Karin Keller-Sutter (59) in the Federal Council. Since Berset’s resignation announcement, she is finally considered the strongest member of the government. In order not to have to play second fiddle in the Federal Council, the SP will think carefully about who it puts on its Federal Council ticket.
