There are two Alain Bersets. One is the party minister who celebrates on the Street Parade with a borsalino, red feather boa, beer can and cigar, who makes risotto at Monte Verità or, as on Thursday, opened the Zurich Film Festival with humorous words.

The other Alain Berset is the federal councilor with lines of concern. He was once the hope of his party and is considered a skilled tactician. However, in government he had taken it upon himself to give the people the bitter pill of a completely blocked health policy.

The audience saw this Alain Berset on Tuesday: during his speech he seemed serious and went on for a long time before finally coming to the unpleasant subject of the occasion; behind him were graphs and statistics intended to put the drama into perspective. Because the SP magistrate had to announce an increase in health insurance premiums by 8.7 percent during the last period of his term of office: premium shock! Bonus hammer! Bonus boost! These are not the headlines a departing politician wants to be remembered by.

Certainly not the man from Freiburg who, despite all the scandals and scandals, managed to create a ‘bella figura’ like no other in his career. The blackmail affair, the Corona leaks, the failed hobby flight over France, his fight against a 5G antenna – everything rolled out of his mind. Next to his practically dressed colleagues, Berset always looked like a statesman of European rank.

And now this! When Berset took over the Interior Department in 2012, the average monthly bonus was 250 francs. Next year that will be more than 360 francs, which corresponds to an increase of 44 percent.

The bonus rounds under him weren’t even worse than under his predecessors – and don’t forget: life expectancy has also increased over the twelve years.

But history is merciless. By Alain Berset The skyrocketing healthcare costs will not be forgotten. And the image of a man puffing on a cigar with Borsalino and wearing a red feather boa on the Love Mobile.
