At its meeting on Friday, the Federal Council decided to implement the corresponding amendment to the Public Information Act (BGÖ) and the associated regulation on November 1, 2023.
Citizens currently have to pay a fee to access official documents. In the future, this will only be the case if processing a request for access takes more than eight working hours, according to the press release.
Yet today, costs are already incurred in very few cases, the report continues. According to the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner, fees were only charged for 29 of the 1,180 access requests processed in 2022.
Since 2006, anyone can request access to official documents under the Public Information Act, without having to demonstrate a special interest.
