The IT outage of network components at the Wolfsburg location has existed since noon, a spokesperson said on Wednesday evening. The cause is not yet known. The Wolfsburg car manufacturer has convened a crisis team.
The four car production plants in Germany are currently at a standstill: Wolfsburg, Emden, Zwickau and Osnabrück are affected. The parts factories in Kassel, Braunschweig and Salzgitter are also affected: “The disruption has existed since 12:30 p.m. and is currently being analyzed. There are implications for car manufacturing plants.”
VW subsidiary Audi is also affected by the IT disruption, an Audi spokeswoman said this evening. To what extent this is the case is still being investigated.
The company spokesperson was initially unable to say anything about the impact abroad. At this point it doesn’t seem like an outside attack. It is not yet possible to estimate when the problem will be solved and production can start again. The Handelsblatt previously reported on this.
At the end of August, VW’s rival Toyota suffered a total failure. At the Japanese car giant, technical problems led to a complete production stop for one day in Japan. The cause of this was an error in the parts order management system. It was later said that the cause was insufficient storage space on servers. It was emphasized that the incident was not a cyber attack.
Toyota had to close all its factories in March last year after domestic supplier Kojima Industries suffered a system outage due to a cyber attack. All 28 Toyota production lines across its 14 factories were affected, affecting production of approximately 13,000 vehicles. The company was also forced to temporarily halt some of its operations in July after a cyber attack on a computer system at Nagoya Port, a Toyota hub, disrupted port services for two days. (SDA)
