The chairman of the SVP-Winterthur Mariawegelin (44) works with right-wing extremists, as the SonntagsBlick recently made public. Tobias L.* manages her profile on X (formerly Twitter) and Manuel C.* produces campaign videos for the SVP politician. Both belong to Junge Tat, a right-wing extremist group that is monitored by the Federal Intelligence Service.
So far, Towegelin’s questions have remained unanswered. It seems that the politician wants to sit out the scandal. But that is becoming more difficult now.
Pressure from our own ranks
Because Wegelin wants to sit in the National Council – and now arouses the displeasure of one of her supporters. The Winterthur homeowners association (HEV), which had recommended her for election, gave her an ultimatum. President Martin Farner (59) says: “The HEV region of Winterthur expects Mariawegelin to immediately and clearly distance itself from right-wing extremism, as well as from the feelings of the Junge Tat group.” If it does not do this, the HEV will withdraw the election advice.
SVP Zurich sees no need for action
But it’s a half-hearted ultimatum. At the same time, the association writes that all election advice remains valid as long as no criminal offenses are committed against a candidate – or as long as the party does not distance itself from the candidate.
And Domenik Ledergeber (35), the chairman of the canton party SVP, remains with Wegelin: he told Blick that business relations are the candidate’s private matter. Ledergerber distances himself from any extremism. Nevertheless, he sees no need for action if a candidate for the National Council outsources her media work to Junge Tat.
The Young Socialists see it differently. For them, Wegenin is not an isolated case and that is why they write in a press release: “The radicalized SVP is a danger to freedom and democracy.” The comrades call on all democratic parties to clearly distance themselves from the SVP. According to Juso, the SVP “can at least be described as fascist.”
