Switzerland should join the climate club of the G-7 countries.

Switzerland wants to join the G-7 climate club, an association of the main industrialized countries. For a long time, the Federal Council officially said that the content of the climate club initiative was still not very specific. This view now appears to have changed.

On Friday, Federal Council spokesperson and Vice Chancellor André Simonazzi (55) made a similar statement. This membership is possible as long as it has no financial consequences, Simonazzi explained to the media.

The Climate Club is open to all countries

At the end of 2022, the merger of Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Great Britain, Japan and the US was formally launched. The idea of a climate club goes back to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (65).

While Bern waited to officially announce its accession, Switzerland is already a member of the initiative, according to the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, as the Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote on Friday. “Switzerland is already a member of the climate club,” the newspaper quoted a spokesperson as saying.

As an intergovernmental forum, the Climate Club should be open to all countries committed to the full implementation of the Paris Agreement. (oco/SDA)
