As soon as autumn approaches, Corona will be back. The Federal Office for Public Health (BAG) and the Federal Commission for Vaccination Issues adjusted their vaccination recommendations this week. Blick answers the most important questions.
Who should get vaccinated?
The federal government recommends vaccination for “particularly vulnerable people”. These are retirees and people aged 16 and over with a chronic illness such as cardiovascular disease, lung or respiratory disease or high blood pressure or people with trisomy 21.
Who can spare themselves the kicks?
All others. From the federal government’s perspective, anyone who is under 65 and does not have a pre-existing condition does not need to do anything. For people under 65 without health risk factors, there is a “very low risk of serious illness.” There is no vaccination advice for them. However, vaccination is possible on request for a fee.
When should vaccination take place?
Vaccination is recommended for autumn and winter. “The ideal time for the Covid-19 vaccination is between mid-October and mid-December.” The only restriction: The shovel may be placed six months after the last vaccination or known infection.
What use are the vaccinations?
The federal government writes that the vaccination improves protection against serious diseases and their complications for several months. Dan Staner (55), the Swiss boss of vaccine manufacturer Moderna, recently said in Blick that his company would deliver an adapted vaccine to Switzerland in “two to three weeks” that also works against the two new corona variants Eris and Pirola.
In the risk groups, even with a vaccination, people are not immune to disease and have a mild course. “But the vaccines provide extra protection against serious diseases. If you already have poor health, that is crucial!”, cantonal doctor Rudolf Hauri (63) recently told Blick.
Until now, it was unclear how well a corona vaccination works against infections and whether vaccinated people are less contagious. Now new research from the University of Geneva shows that without vaccination, depending on the variant, three to four out of ten people who come into contact with the virus will become infected. With a vaccination that is only one in ten people. SRF reported on the research for the first time.
Moreover, “Vaccinated people are less contagious,” says study author Denis Mongin. Vaccinated people would therefore transmit the virus less. However, this plays a smaller role in the spread of the virus. “The most important protection of the vaccination is that you are less likely to become infected,” says researcher Delphine Courvoisier.
How do the cantons respond?
The vaccinations would be carried out in the usual structures. “The corona vaccination is now comparable to a flu vaccination. Only the vaccine logistics are still handled by the federal government and cantons,” Hauri said. This means: Anyone who wants to be vaccinated can go to a doctor’s practice or pharmacy. However, the situation may differ from canton to canton and, for example, lead to the establishment of vaccination centers. (brother)
