Swiss cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) takes place within the framework of the Partnership for Peace, the Ministry of Defense (DDPS) announced on Thursday. The Federal Council will determine the priorities for this, most recently in March 2022.

On this basis, NATO and Switzerland will jointly develop a non-legally binding document on the Individually Tailored Partnership Program (ITPP) for two years. According to VBS, this document was recently completed.

Collaboration on many levels

On the one hand, general objectives are formulated there. This includes continuing dialogue and specific objectives such as cooperation on new technologies and innovation, resilience, promotion of women and peace, disarmament or non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

On the other hand, several goals concern the interaction of military systems (interoperability). According to VBS information, it concerns the air force or communications. In addition, Switzerland’s participation in NATO’s competence center should be increased and staff officers should be sent to NATO.

Switzerland has been participating in the Partnership for Peace since 1996. This is a NATO program for bilateral cooperation with individual partner states.

The Federal Council wants to increase international cooperation

The tailor-made program allows Switzerland to cooperate with states in the regional environment based on its interests and needs. Participation in the partnership is reportedly compatible with neutrality.
