The St. Gallen canton council discussed answers to urgent proposals late on Wednesday afternoon. (archive image)

The SP faction asked for information following the investigation into sexual abuse in the Catholic Church published last week. The canton must create an independent point of contact for those affected, relatives and contemporary witnesses.

In its response, the government stated that it considered church reporting and contact points unsuitable because they led to “unwise parallel structures”. Those affected and witnesses should contact law enforcement authorities or victim support centers.

It should also be examined whether rules such as those in the Archiving and Archiving Act should also apply to the diocese, the Catholic Church or other institutions.

Another topic discussed by the SP faction was the increase in health insurance premiums. The government must explain what improvements in premium reductions will be made by 2024 to ease the burden on the population.

The spokesperson for the SP faction was satisfied with the information in the council. Eligibility requirements have been improved for the current year. For 2024, the budget uses the statutory maximum amount for premium discounts. Together with the federal contribution, this increased the resources by 20 million francs. (SDA)
