Four out of five people with disabilities in Switzerland feel seriously excluded in some area of life.

People with disabilities often encounter obstacles in their daily lives. These can occur in different areas. In a representative study, Pro Infirmis, the umbrella organization for people with disabilities, evaluated these challenges for those affected for the first time.

The areas of life examined were politics, work, mobility, culture, sport and leisure, education, housing, social relations, law, health care, information and communication.

The results of the survey among more than 1,400 participants show that there is a great need for action. Because: In Switzerland, four out of five people with disabilities feel that their participation is severely limited in at least one of the ten areas surveyed.

Politics, work and mobility are most affected

Nearly half of them experience serious limitations in three or more areas of life. More than a fifth of people with disabilities are also severely limited in at least half of the areas of life surveyed.

The areas of life most affected are politics, work and mobility. Three quarters of those affected feel that they are not or insufficiently represented by politics. They believe that politicians do too little for people with disabilities.

About half of people with disabilities also think they do not have good chances of finding a job on the regular labor market. On the one hand, because there are not enough companies that want to employ people with disabilities. On the other hand, because there are too few jobs where these people can work at all.

Switzerland still has a long development process ahead of it

People with disabilities also experience significant limitations in terms of mobility. A third of respondents feel limited in public transport – for example because platforms and platforms are too high or too low, making it difficult to get on and off. Also, one in three people feel very excluded when using motor vehicles.

In the other seven areas of life, the research also shows a significant proportion of people who are socially limited due to a disability. Overall, the research shows that Switzerland still has a long way to go to become an inclusive society.

It is therefore all the more fundamental to develop measures in all areas of life together with those affected and to implement them immediately, writes Pro Infirmis. This is the only way to guarantee equal participation of people with disabilities in society. (oco)
