FDP finds this “unacceptable”: the federal government grants asylum to all Afghan women

The situation for women in Afghanistan is catastrophic.

There was also great horror in Switzerland when the Taliban retook power in Afghanistan two years ago. The images of the fleeing Western forces have been broadcast around the world. The biggest victims of religious fanatics are women, whose rights are continually restricted. For them there was a wave of solidarity.

That was a long time ago. Now the FDP finds it “unacceptable” that the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) has changed the admission practice for Afghan women. According to the party, all women who fled the Taliban regime will now be granted asylum in Switzerland. She demands that this change be reversed. This would run the risk that the SEM would have a pull effect – Switzerland would become the preferred destination country for Afghan women in Europe.

Not much changes

The State Secretariat for Migration confirmed the matter when asked by Blick: “The situation of women in Afghanistan has become increasingly worse since the Taliban came to power. Because they are victims of persecution because of their gender, we have slightly adjusted our asylum practices,” explains spokesperson Daniel Bach.

In contrast to the FDP, the SEM does not assume that the adjustment will lead to major changes in practice: “Afghan women have almost always received asylum or temporary admission and thus the protection of Switzerland,” says Bach. “So in practice not much will change.” Naturally, every request will continue to be examined.

In harmony with neighboring countries

The FDP’s fear that Afghan women themselves would travel from EU countries in the future and apply for asylum here also seems unfounded: as the SEM says, Europe’s neighbors have adapted their practices in exactly the same way as Switzerland. In addition, the Dublin regime still applies, which stipulates that an asylum application can only be submitted once within the Schengen area.

But the FDP also fears that Afghan women, once they were granted asylum here, would have their entire family follow them. “Allowing Afghan women to immediately join their nuclear families risks losing control of immigration in the asylum system and increases the risk of abuse,” the party wrote.

SEM: Less than 200 women per year

This is really where the biggest change is coming. Unlike temporary admission, recognized refugees can bring parts of their family, namely their spouses and minor children, with them.

Here too, the rebound effect will probably be manageable: as the SEM announced in response to a question from Blick, only 188 Afghan women have traveled alone to Switzerland in the past twelve months. “And there were only six men who joined their Afghan wives through family reunification,” Bach said.

According to “Weltwoche”, it also concerns Afghan women who are currently being admitted provisionally. They should also be given asylum status: that would be 3,117 women.

The UN asked for asylum

Since the Taliban came to power two years ago, women and girls are no longer allowed to go to school, work or go out in public without a male guardian. They are forced to marry and have to cover themselves completely.

Last but not least, Switzerland also responded to a call from the United Nations by granting asylum. States around the world must “grant refugee status to all Afghan women and girls,” UN human rights monitors demanded three weeks ago. The Taliban had introduced a system of “total discrimination, exclusion and oppression”. (sf)
