Parliament wants to oblige the cantons to make more money available to reduce health insurance premiums in the future. (subject image)

On Tuesday, the National Council joined the Council of States when it came to expanding premium reductions. With 104 votes in favor, 86 votes against and 2 abstentions, the Grand Chamber voted in favor of the proposal of its provisional advisory committee. The majority of the middle class described the proposal as a “big step”. The Left Council, together with the GLP, spoke of an “inadequate solution”.

The compromise now found in the indirect counter-proposal to the SP’s premium exemption initiative means additional costs of approximately 356 million francs for the cantons. The National Council had originally demanded more than two billion francs for additional premium reductions, of which another 800 million francs would be borne by the cantons.

The bill is now ready for the final vote.
