The SVP has musical competition. As of today, the FDP also has its election campaign song! ‘Original liberal’ is the title. A liberal trio wrote, composed and recorded the song: Esther-Mirjam de Boer (54), Peter Metzinger (59) and Nicolas Zahn (34). All three are participating in the elections for the National Council in the canton of Zurich.

Their message: “We make politics for the economy!” And even though it is complicated, ‘plain text at the beer table’ is needed. But ‘with decency’, as the text says.

“This sets us apart from the SVP,” guitarist Metzinger told Blick. But he makes it clear that this was not a response to the SVP’s controversial election campaign song. The idea had already emerged during an FDP event in May. However, it took some time to implement it, so the song will now launch on September 12.

Suitable for September 12

A date full of history for liberalism. On September 12, 1848, the Federal Constitution, written by the liberal founding fathers, came into effect, laying the foundation for the modern federal state.

This year, modern Switzerland celebrates its 175th anniversary. “With our song we convey the liberal values that are still of central importance today,” says Metzinger.

The song was created independently

The piece comes across as rocking. Isn’t the liberal afraid that he, like the SVP of musician Nile Rodgers (70), will be called about a possible copyright infringement? “No, I’m not worried about that,” says Peter Metzinger, laughing: “Even if I would like to be called by some rock star, I can’t imagine that there is a similarity anywhere. After all, we are originally liberal.”

The song was created independently, the Zurich resident emphasizes. But it can never be ruled out with absolute certainty that another musician has not already used a similar melody.

Boost for the final sprint

For him it is important that the election campaign song gives the Liberals a real boost for the final sprint. According to the latest SRG election barometer, the FDP should fear for third place in the party rankings; the center is narrowly ahead of the liberals in terms of voter favor.

“Our song creates identity, we want to use it to mobilize our base,” says Metzinger. Because the goal is clear, as the text says: “Send us to Bern! Vote liberal!”
