Healthcare costs are skyrocketing and premiums continue to rise. And because it is currently an election campaign, so-called patent solutions are springing up like mushrooms: budget money! Abolition of the obligation! Bigger bonuses for the rich!

But these are symptom therapies at best. The only thing that touches the root of the system is the SP’s demand for one fund. The radical approach is popular with the population, according to recent studies. The insured have had enough of the endless reform backlogs.

Parliament is responsible for this. Many representatives are mainly representatives of insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies and hospitals. The 38 members of the two health committees have 69 mandates from the health sector. The elected lobbyists torpedo any initiative that does not suit their clients. The result: a permanent blockage of health policy.

In 2022, State Councilor Beat Rieder demanded that parliamentarians must give up all mandates related to their committee work. The small room didn’t even respond to the advance. The elected politicians have no interest in changing their income.

Maybe people do. An initiative against lobbying by politicians would probably have a good chance at the ballot box. A central reason for skyrocketing health care costs would be eliminated – as well as many other problems.
