Joy and sadness are close together in the SP. With Federal President Alain Berset (51), she has in her ranks the Federal Councilor who is regarded as particularly influential by the population. 69 percent of those polled see him as the most powerful in office, as shown by the latest SRG election barometer.
On the other side of the scale: SP Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59). 63 percent attribute the least influence to her. Ten percentage points more than FDP federal councilor Ignazio Cassis (62), who has finally got rid of the red lantern.
One reason for the Jura’s poor performance: she has only been in office since the beginning of this year and has not yet been able to score much. SVP newcomer Albert Rösti (56), who is already in third place in the power ranking, shows that things can be done differently.
Quick start for hash browns
It also has to do with the themes. Energy policy is Rösti’s hobby – and now as electricity general he has to secure the supply and manage the energy transition. Rösti got off to a flying start in the Uvek super department, which, in addition to energy, also includes the fields of environment, transport and communication.
With the expansion of highways and the railway network up to and including the SRG debate or his tough anti-wolf policy, he causes discussions. “He put his own accents, but also made a name for himself as a bridge builder,” says a civilian parliamentarian.
False start for Baume-Schneider
Baume-Schneider, on the other hand, made a false start in difficult terrain. With her idea for an asylum container, she first stumbled in the Federal Council and then fell flat on her face in Parliament. “Asylum policy is her most important file, but she seems to be going without a strategy and making the wrong decisions from the start,” Mitte party leader Philipp Matthias Bregy (45) told Blick. “You cannot make decisions at high speed over the heads of the affected cantons and municipalities.” Bregy knows what he is talking about, as the municipality of Turtmann in his home canton of Valais was intended as a site for a container facility – while he was on the barricades.
Major projects are missing
Baume-Schneider is currently missing the big political projects with which she can score. Asylum procedures have already been accelerated, marriage has been enforced for everyone and the law on joint stock companies has been revised.
The ban on hitting has more of a symbolic character than criminal consequences. There is currently no sign of a giant box for her to put her stamp on.
«Harmless-naive art»
That she would have the least influence has not only to do with the subjects, but also with her performances. For example in the committees. “Sometimes she lacks file security, so she does not exactly exude competence,” says a Member of Parliament.
“Even her innocent, naive nature certainly doesn’t strengthen her influence in the Federal Council to coexist with Alphas like Alain Berset or Karin Keller-Sutter.” This confirms the calculation of some, especially liberal, middle-class people, who in the elections for the Federal Council preferred Baume-Schneider, who was considered ‘weaker’, to Eva Herzog (61), to win the SP- annoying management.
Just as tasty as Rösti
If the Jurassin has no power, she certainly isn’t lacking in sympathy. People like them, they say in the House of Representatives. “She’s likeable and fun,” says Bregy. “Personally, I get on very well with her.”
And that is how it is perceived by the general public. In the likeability rating, she shares third place with Rösti with 3.2 points out of 5 – behind Viola Amherd (61) and Alain Berset.
