St. Gallen FDP country councilor Marcel Dobler (43) has a strong build. About six feet tall, muscular, 200 pounds live weight, a mountain of a man.
Solothurn SVP Land Council member Christian Imark (41) feels a head shorter and weighs only 78 kilos. He pulls, tears and pushes. Nothing to do. The head slowly turns red. Then a short tug – ready for fun. Dobler pushes Imark into the sawdust.
The art of lifting pants
In fact, the small political group’s excursion into the world of wrestling was not planned at all. Instead, FC Nationalrat wanted to compete against a selection of wrestlers on the football field. But the appointment had to be postponed. “The wrestlers got away with it again,” FC National Council Captain and SVP National Councilor Lars Guggisberg (46.80 pounds) says with a smile.
Kranz-Schwinger Stefan Studer (38, 113 kilos) was invited back. In the Schwingkeller Kirchberg BE, the politicians entered unknown territory. Here, where wrestling kings such as Matthias Sempach (37) are steeled, they tried the art of swinging the pants under expert supervision.
Steeled for the election campaign
“Wings is the number one Swiss national sport, you have to do it once,” says Guggisberg, who was a fan of wrestling as a child and, like many of his party colleagues, regularly attends wrestling festivals. You can now take two turns – the Kurz and the Schlungg – with the effeff. Or at least almost. And they feel steeled for the election campaign.
If everything works out, maybe the entire FC Nationalrat team will take a trip to the sawdust. “This is how we bring more momentum to politics,” jokes Guggisberg. “I’d rather stick to football.”
And so much can still be revealed: the video for the Schwing excursion was edited by FDP colleague Dobler, Guggisberg emphasizes with a grin. “That’s why he gets away with it so well.” (dba)
