This means that 61-year-old Erich Ettlin can be sure of his third term in office. Ettlin lives in Kerns and is a tax consultant. As a semi-canton, Obwalden has only one seat in the small chamber of federal councils.
Ettlin is the second elected Council of States of the new parliamentary term. The Innerrhoden Mitte representative Daniel Fässler (63) was confirmed for another term at the Landsgemeinde in the spring.
Competition for SVP National Councillor
Obwalden also has only one seat in the National Council, the previous National Councilor Monika Rüegger (SVP) is standing up again. The 55-year-old from Engelberg was the first woman in her canton to be elected to the National Council in 2019.
Rüegger is challenged by Nico Fankhauser (FDP). De Giswiler is 26 years old, business economist and chairman of the Obwaldner Jungfreisinnige. The FDP Obwalden justified the attack on the SVP seat by saying it was “independent and progressive”.
Firstly, the GLP had run for the National Council and nominated Alpnach city councilor Paddy Matter to provide an alternative to the SVP Ms. Rüegger. After the FDP entered the race, the small and still young GLP withdrew its candidacy. (SDA)
