On Monday, the number of candidates for the National Council was known almost everywhere, because now also single-seat cantons that have silent elections have announced their candidacy. In Nidwalden there are three candidates to succeed Peter Keller (52, SVP), in Obwalden there are two.
The other four cantons with only one seat in the Grand Chamber have no or only a voluntary registration period; candidacies are possible there until election day. This is the case in the two Appenzells. Struggle elections are to be expected in Ausserrhoden.
Uri also has no registration deadline and has two National Council candidatures to date. Finally, according to the current state of affairs, there are four applications to succeed Martin Landolt (55, center) in Glarus.
About 1260, more than four years ago
Four years ago, after all deadlines had passed and the lists had been purged, there were 4,660 candidates for the National Council. Several cantons have reported record numbers of candidates for the next election, including Zurich, Bern, Vaud, Solothurn and Graubünden.
In at least three cantons, however, the number of candidates is lower than four years ago. Among them is Basel-Stadt with 122 candidates. The city canton currently has five seats, but has to relinquish one of them to Zurich due to its population. The number of candidates is also lower in Freiburg and Valais than in 2019.
Now 100 extra lists every time
The number of lists submitted so far is again higher than in 2019. In the twenty cantons with proportional representation procedures, 618 lists were submitted on Monday evening. In 2019 – after the adjustment – there were 511 and in 2015 there were only 422. Many more partial lists were submitted in several cantons than four years ago.
More than 170 people are aiming for one of the 46 seats in the Council of States. Two council members are already certain of their next term: Daniel Fässler (centre/AI) was confirmed in office by the Landsgemeinde in the spring. Erich Ettlin (center/OW) was elected silently. (SDA)
