The retention period of automatically generated images of car numbers is controversial in the Grand Council. (archive image)

Parliament started a debate on the police law on Monday afternoon. When it comes to the storage period of car number plates, the SP-Juso argued with the GLP for a maximum storage period of 15 days. According to Marianne Schild (GLP/Bern), the retention period can be adjusted in the future depending on experience.

A minority of the committee asked for a retention period of 60 days. In order to solve crimes, the police need this data, says Andreas Hegg (FDP/Lyss), spokesman for the minority committee. This is not about personal data, but about car numbers.

The majority of the Safety Committee proposed a retention period of 30 days.
