Folk festival in Bern on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the Federal Constitution: “Tilo” is unveiled

175 years ago, on September 12, 1848, the first federal constitution was adopted. On the evening of next Tuesday, people are invited to celebrate at the Bundesplatz. Subsequently, the artwork ‘Tilo’ will be unveiled on the facade of the Parliament building.

The festival, in which several artists perform, will start on September 12 at 5:30 p.m., the parliamentary services announced on Tuesday. At 6:48 pm – commemorating the year in which modern Switzerland was founded – the ‘Tilo’ mosaic will be unveiled in the tympanum of the parliament building.

The artwork’s 246 ceramic plates, which reflect differently depending on the incidence of light, represent the 200 seats in the National Council and the 46 seats in the Council of States. The title of the work is a tribute to Tilo Frey (1923-2008), one of the first women to be elected to the National Council in 1971.

The curtain falls on the Federal Palace

Behind “Tilo” is the artist couple Renée Levi and Marcel Schmid. Levi, Schmid and the Jubilee Protection Committee with President of the National Council Martin Candinas (center/GR), President of the Council of States Brigitte Häberli-Koller (center/TG), Minister of Justice Elisabeth Baume-Schneider and President of the Federal Supreme Court Justice Yves Donzallaz will be there as the huge curtain falls on the facade of the parliament building.

The 175th anniversary of the Constitution will be celebrated in parliament on the morning of September 12, along with the seven members of the Federal Council and the President of the Federal Court. Representatives of the cantonal governments and ambassadors of neighboring countries are also invited.

During this celebration, the original of the Federal Constitution will be presented, in its 1848 version. This document is on loan from the Federal Archives.
