There are 10 weeks of school holidays in the canton of Ticino.

Primary school students in the Canton of Ticino enjoy 10 weeks of summer vacation. This makes them the sole leader, write the CH Media newspapers. This is followed by the cantons of Valais at 7.5 weeks – although this may vary per municipality – and Geneva, Jura, Uri and Vaud at 7 weeks each. The cantons of Aargau, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Bern, St. Gallen, Schaffhausen, Schwyz, Thurgau and Zurich form the rear with 5 weeks each.

In total, the Ticino have 16 weeks of school holidays, other cantons more than 13. Holidays that are consecutive for too long are controversial. For example, the Belgian region of Wallonia shortened the summer holidays because too long breaks meant that children and young people were out of the running at the start of the new school year. However, in Switzerland there is a lack of data to compare the different lengths of school holidays.

“I’m glad my kids are in the pool”

In the canton of Ticino, however, there is no problem. State Councilor Marco Romano (40) emphasizes that combining work and school holidays is an organizational challenge. Add to that the warm weather. «My car shows 33 degrees. I’m glad my kids are in the pool and not in a hot class,” he tells “CH Media”.

The Ticino Ministry of Education also cites the high temperatures as a contributing factor. During the holidays there are various sports or language courses throughout the canton. Everyone there would have a chance to participate, spokesman Pietro Snider said. He doesn’t believe the long break will hurt performance. “The Ticino education system produces good results regardless of the length of the summer vacation.” In the PISA tests, the students from Ticino were in the middle or above average, depending on the subject.
