“No cooperation”: CDU leader Merz rows back after AfD statement

He wrote on Twitter on Monday: “To be clear, and I have never said otherwise, the decision of the CDU applies. There will also be no cooperation between the CDU and the AfD at the municipal level.”

On the other hand, Merz tweeted on Sunday night: “The topic of cooperation with the AfD touches the legislative bodies, ie in the European Parliament, in the Bundestag and in the state parliaments.” This was in line with the line he had previously represented in the ZDF summer interview on Sunday.

There, Merz said that local politics is different from state and federal politics. If the AfD has now elected a district administrator in the state of Thuringia and a mayor in Saxony-Anhalt, then these are democratic elections. “We have to accept that. And of course the local parliaments have to look for ways to shape the city, the state and the neighborhood together.”

The AfD (Alternative for Germany) has been classified as a suspected right-wing extremist by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (German internal secret service). In surveys, it is currently up to 22 percent across Germany. That’s more than twice your result in the 2021 federal election. (SDA)
