The Aargauer Sozialdienst (KSD) wants to accommodate a maximum of 50 young asylum seekers at Mülligerstrasse 11 in Windisch AG from September. The intended change of use of the building had caused quite a stir because previous tenants had received notice of termination for the cheap apartments in the old building.
The State Secretariat for Migration SEM has allocated 150 unaccompanied minor asylum seekers (AMVs) to the canton of Aargau in the first half of the year, the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs DGS announced on Thursday. By the end of 2023, the canton expects an additional 120 refugee minors to be allocated. The KSD needs more places to accommodate everyone.
Only vacant apartments are inhabited
At Mülligerstrasse 11 in Windisch, 16 residential units are empty, which will be gradually inhabited from September, the DGS writes. The KSD is currently busy recruiting the employees who will supervise up to 50 unaccompanied minors around the clock. The buildings at Mülligerstrasse 13 and Zelglistrasse 9 are still inhabited and “not part of the temporary destination for the time being”, the DGS further reports.
The canton of Aargau originally planned to realize 32 residential units for 100 UMAs in the three residential buildings on Mülligerstrasse/Zelglistrasse in Windisch. This was for three years as a temporary use before the owner wanted to demolish the old buildings for new construction.
Canton found other properties
After protests broke out, Aargau’s health director, Jean-Pierre Gallati (SVP), admitted mistakes. In the clarifications, the KSD “did not pay attention” to the aspect of the existing leases and the consequences for tenants. The canton therefore assured tenants of support in finding new apartments and was prepared to waive immediate terminations.
The KSD has now sought alternative solutions and opened new housing for underage asylum seekers in Windisch and Vogelsang/Gebenstorf, as the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs announced on Thursday. Together with an extension of existing accommodation in Aarau and Unterenfelden, 100 additional places have already been created. (SDA)
