Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis (62) will travel to Brussels on Tuesday. The Vice-President of the EU Commission, Maros Sefcovic (56), announced last week that he would like to talk to Cassis about the next steps after the federal elections at the end of October.
The EU Vice-President wants to “increase the chances and possibility of a successful outcome of the negotiations”. According to Sefcovic, this would be the “best possible news for the EU and Switzerland”.
Negotiating partners want to go one step further
Cassis’ visit to Brussels is part of the regular contacts he and Sefcovic maintain at the political level in light of the ongoing talks between Switzerland and the EU. The Federal Council of the FDP and the Vice President of the EU last met in Bern in mid-March.
After the Bundesrat as a whole passed the benchmarks for a negotiating mandate with the EU at the end of June, the current meeting should make it possible to define a new position. The next steps in the exploratory talks must also be outlined on a technical and diplomatic level.
Before the end of the year, the Federal Council intends to reassess the situation – and at the same time prepare for the adoption of a negotiating mandate, as already announced. (dba)
