The days of the united business lobby are over. This was already apparent on the Knorz with Brussels, where Euroturbos and isolationists are irreconcilably opposed to each other.

The economic umbrella organization Economiesuisse is also threatened with a crucial test in environmental and energy policy. Stimulus taxes, expansion of solar energy and nuclear power plants cause a bitter discussion within the bourgeois camp. Especially in the election year.

Nothing sums it up better than the personal details currently being talked about at the control center on Zurich’s Hegibachstrasse: Alexander Keberle (31), a sought-after energy expert and interviewee, is running for the National Council on Zurich’s list Green liberals in the autumn.

SVP and FDP also pay wages

Spicy thing: Keberle is a member of the board of directors of Economiesuisse and head of the environment, energy and infrastructure department there, so he is responsible for the highly controversial file. As SonntagsBlick has been able to find out, the executive committees of the lobby organization are “not amused”. “Senior employees of the association must refrain from political functions,” says a board member, “especially in an explosive field such as energy policy.” Especially since Keberle’s salary – as the economist points out – is also financed by members of the association who belong to the SVP or the right wing of the Freisinn, an environmental biotope completely different from that of the Green Liberals.

When asked, Keberle emphasized that he was convinced that a trade association should have broad support. «Economiesuisse is committed in its statutes to a liberal, sustainable market economy. An economy that does not protect the environment will not be successful in the long run.”

Conversely, “environmental protection that does not strengthen the economy is itself not sustainable”. In addition, he makes a clear distinction between his position at Economiesuisse and his party, “but so far I have never been involved in such a conflict”.

The rift in energy policy that runs through the middle of the middle-class camp is also reflected in the rift between Economiesuisse president Christoph Mäder (64) and board member Magdalena Martullo (53).

The two fell out over the climate law, which was opposed by Martullos SVP but supported by Economiesuisse. According to “Weltwoche”, Mäder will leave the board of directors of Ems-Chemie. The differences with the CEO became too great.

The days of the united business lobby are over.
