Moderna has submitted an application in Switzerland for approval of a renewed corona vaccine. As the US-based biotech company announced on Thursday, the current vaccine elicits an immune response against the XBB line of coronaviruses.
Preliminary clinical tests have thus shown that the vaccine elicits an immune response against the XBB variants currently occurring in Switzerland.
A new species is circulating
The World Health Organization (WHO) has determined that the original strain and related variants of the Covid virus are no longer circulating in humans.
Therefore, for a robust immune response to the currently circulating variants, global regulatory and health authorities have recommended updating Covid vaccines to XBB.1.5 variants.
Effective against XBB
According to Swiss regulatory agency Swissmedic, Moderna has now presented a vaccine candidate effective in preclinical studies and in preliminary clinical trials against the XBB sublines. (SDA)
