A white sheep kicking a black: the subject evokes memories of the deportation initiative. But it is not the SVP who is combing the archives just in time for the launch of the election campaign. No, the well-known photo was recently posted on Twitter by the Russian UN mission in Geneva.
The Russian UN envoys use the SVP sheep for their propaganda. In the tweet they criticize the human rights situation in Switzerland, the “NZZ” reports. The first point to be denounced is the alleged discrimination against Russian citizens in Switzerland. This probably has to do with Western sanctions, which Switzerland largely supports. The subject of sheep will probably refer to it.
Freedom of expression is limited
Second, Russia criticizes overcrowded prisons in western Switzerland. The Russian UN MPs are probably talking in particular about the situation in the Champ-Dollon prison in the canton of Geneva. This has even been criticized repeatedly in the past. However, the situation is far from comparable to that in Russian prisons.
Last but not least, the Russians criticize Switzerland for needlessly enacting laws that restrict freedom of expression. Also in this point of criticism it is not entirely clear what it refers to. The objections of the Russians seem strange, given the human rights situation in their own country.
The danger of Russian propaganda
The criticism is part of the periodic review of the human rights situation in Switzerland by the UN Human Rights Council. It currently meets in Geneva and regularly reviews the situation in each Member State – with all other countries having the opportunity to raise concerns, regardless of their own human rights compliance situation.
Russia is eager to seize this opportunity. The government’s strategy will probably be to sow confusion among the population and gradually develop a different view on certain issues. The SVP sheep – it becomes a toy in an information war. (sq)
