“Federal Councilman Amherd has gone mad.” The association Pro Switzerland, the successor to the Auns, can hardly calm down – and loses all composure. Defense Minister Viola Amherd’s (61) plans to join the European anti-missile defense system Sky Shield have enraged neutrality advocates. In fact, this is another step closer to NATO.

Amherd betrayed Swiss neutrality “to an alarming degree”, Pro Switzerland raged. Only recently, director Werner Gartenmann (58) even mused on Twitter that secret resistance organizations based on the model of the former P 26 and P 27 were needed again – a movement towards illegality against the state authority. In the “Tages-Anzeiger” even Auns founder and SVP mastermind Christoph Blocher (82) had to ask for moderation.

“De facto partnership with NATO”

The moderation was short-lived. Because now Pro Switzerland doubles down with a press release. So the Sky Shield plans would be aligned in the years of middle federal councilor Amherd’s failure: a coherent vision for the implementation of armed neutrality is completely lacking. “Instead of fulfilling your task as head of the DDPS, she prefers to take a picture with NATO exponents and the defense ministers of Austria and Germany.”

The Sky Shield treaty forces Switzerland into a “de facto partnership with NATO and further undermines our neutrality,” says Pro Schweiz with conviction. For example, Swiss taxpayers’ money is being misused to fund NATO interests rather than being used to purchase its own weapons systems. However, the association leaves open which funds these should be.

Amherd wants to remove Pro Switzerland from the DDPS

Amherd itself, on the other hand, sees no problem with “Sky Shield” in terms of neutrality. Like Austria, Switzerland has made certain reservations regarding the law of neutrality in an additional statement. “Any participation in international conflicts is expressly excluded,” the federal councilor emphasized. “It is up to us to decide to what extent we want to participate in this.”

Pro Switzerland cannot be reassured with this. Amherd didn’t even have the decency to inform the Swiss people. In fact, the accession plans in Switzerland became known only after the Austrian media reported about them.

Pro Switzerland has already announced that it will do everything possible to prevent entry into the Sky Shield system and thus a “further erosion of Swiss neutrality”. And that’s not all: Amherd has to go!

The union calls on Federal Council parties to pressure Amherd “to make room for a more suitable candidate for the DDPS”. With that, however, the self-proclaimed guardians of neutrality will probably be lost forever.
