Marco Chiesa has not boarded an airplane for twelve years.

It was 2007 when SVP chairman Marco Chiesa (48) panicked during a flight to Thailand. Relaxing vacations were planned, but the arrival was uncomfortable. “There was a lot of turbulence,” Chiesa recalls.

His girlfriend at the time sat next to him. He told her, “If we survive this, I will marry you.” Those who expect an unromantic proposal are wrong, the wedding has been planned for a long time. But he reveals what the SVP president has long feared: flying.

For twelve years, Chiesa did not get on a plane that took off, he reported to the “NZZ”. The SVP president is about a third of the people who are afraid of flying. He’s not the only one with the trigger either: fear of flying often occurs after flights with turbulence.

Trip to the New York Bull cured him

Most airlines even offer courses to overcome this fear. Chiesa has not visited one – but he is no longer afraid. At the beginning of July, he flew to Brazil for business with Federal Councilor Guy Parmelin (63). And last year we went to New York with the family. A photo on his Facebook profile shows him clutching the horns of the Wall Street bull.

In 2019 he flew for the first time after the turbulence. At that time we went to Vienna. But he really got over his fear of flying when he flew to New York with his family in 2022. “Flying was always a challenge for me, but now I’m completely rid of my skepticism,” says Chiesa. It was his children who gave the impetus. They wanted to see the world, so Papa Chiesa faced his fear – and conquered it. (rba)
