Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider visited Poland and Slovakia on Wednesday and Thursday. Both countries took in large numbers of refugees from Ukraine after the Russian attack.
The trip was an opportunity to understand the immediate impact of financial aid from Switzerland, Baume-Schneider said in an interview with the Keystone-SDA news agency.
UNICEF projects visited
She visited projects of the UN children’s organization Unicef, which mainly supports Ukrainian children and their families. She was touched by what she experienced, she reported. The aid projects relate to health, integration and education.
The minister exchanged views bilaterally with her colleagues in Poland and Slovakia, showing them “great appreciation”, as she said. Both countries would have had to take in a very large number of refugees from Ukraine in a very short time. “They have a different idea of what war represents.” (SDA)
